Tsuro

So, the Gamers Paradise near me has been having a sale for the longest time now, buy one board game, get the next half-off. One time, when we went in there, I ended up buying a game and stood around trying to figure out if I should get a second one. Seeing as I like trying to get as big of a discount as I can, I was looking for a big, expensive game (the one I was buying was about $80, so I wanted something at least $75, y'know?). The salesman comes over, and talks Di into talking me into buying this game called Tsuro.

It's $20 or so, so I really want to try to get a bigger game ($35+ discount vs. $10 discount, but, well... Di wins the argument). The few things that are interesting me about it is the asian design style of the game (dragons, pheonixes, etc), and the fact that it's 2 to 8 players. It's really hard to find a game that is that scalable.

So, we pick it up, take it home, and it sits on the shelf forgotten for several months. Then, power goes out, and we're sitting next to our computers idly tapping our fingers on the table by candlelight. Most of the boardgames I have require a bit more illumination to read all the cards, keep track of counters, tokens, etc - plus, didn't really want to get into something big - so we finally pull out Tsuro.

I must admit, it's a fair bit more fun than I'd expected. It's one of those games that's easy to pick up and play, and easy to teach others. After about 2 minutes looking at the rules, we had it (mostly) figured out, enough to play our own game. The two of us had a nice go of it, and ended up playing another round. Then another, then another... then I had to go to work. But when we got together with our friends that weekend, we took it along. Played 3 or 4 games of it with them, too. It's also nice in that a game of it doesn't take forever, and the more people you have involved, the faster it goes.

It's a nice, simple game, and if you know of someone who likes games like Othello and Go, they might enjoy giving it a try. Plus, it's cheap (at least, compared to the games I'm normally buying. :P)
